Overview

Welcome to the Grand Zanskar & Lakes Circuit by Dustandtrails. This 14-day overland expedition is engineered for endurance. Instead of taking the standard highway straight into Ladakh, we break off the map to conquer the remote Zanskar Valley, navigate the Suru basin, and assault the high-altitude Changthang plateau.

With a full preparation day in Manali, riders will build their acclimatization naturally on the motorcycles as they ascend through Zanskar. This is a relentless, continuous push across the harshest terrain in India, designed for riders who demand true adventure backed by our veteran mechanical support and deep regional expertise.

Route: Delhi → Manali → Padum → Leh → Umling La → Tso Moriri → Jispa

Itinerary

Phase 1: The Zanskar Penetration

  • Day 01: Delhi to Manali (Overnight Transit): The expedition begins. Board the overnight Volvo bus from Delhi, leaving the plains behind and driving up into the foothills of the Himalayas.
  • Day 02: Manali Stay & Preparation: Arrive in Manali. Today is dedicated to rest and preparation for the high-altitude journey ahead. We allocate bikes, conduct thorough test rides, secure gear, and hold the crucial expedition briefing.
  • Day 03: Manali to Jispa: We officially hit the road, driving via the Atal Tunnel to enter the rugged Lahaul Valley. A highly scenic drive along the Bhaga River brings us to our riverside camp in Jispa.
  • Day 04: Jispa to Padum: We leave the main highway and enter the remote Zanskar Valley via Shinku La. This is a day of raw, off-road terrain, fierce river crossings, and untouched mountain landscapes before reaching Padum.
  • Day 05: Padum to Kargil: An epic drive through Zanskar’s dramatic terrain. We cross Pensi La, the gateway to Zanskar, riding past the massive Drang Drung Glacier and through the isolated Suru Valley onwards to Kargil.

The Zanskar Advantage:

By routing through Padum and Kargil over three days instead of rushing straight to Leh, we allow your body to undergo dynamic acclimatization. You are actively riding and adapting to the elevation, making you physically primed for the extreme heights of the Changthang plateau later in the week.

Phase 2: The High-Altitude Lakes

  • Day 06: Kargil to Leh: A scenic, fast-paced ride on the tarmac along the Indus River. We visit the dramatic lunar landscapes of the Lamayuru belt, cross Fotu La, and roll into the capital city of Leh.
  • Day 07: Leh to Nubra Valley: With no time to waste, we push directly from Leh up to Khardung La (17,982 ft). We descend into the Nubra Valley, characterized by wide river basins and high-altitude desert landscapes.
  • Day 08: Nubra to Pangong Lake: We travel via the infamous Shyok River route directly to Pangong Lake. This remote terrain features challenging water crossings and constantly shifting landscapes before arriving at the deep blue waters.
  • Day 09: Pangong to Hanle: A long endurance drive across the vast Changthang region. We ride remote, high-altitude border routes through Chushul and Tsaga La to reach the Hanle Dark Sky Reserve.
  • The Summit: Umling La: At 19,024 ft, this is the highest motorable road on the planet. Oxygen levels are dangerously low, and crosswinds are brutal. It is the ultimate test of rider endurance and machine capability.
  • Day 10: Hanle – Umling La – Hanle: Our defining excursion. We ride the steep gradients up to Umling La for a brief, victorious photo at the summit before descending back to the safety of Hanle.

Phase 3: The Changthang Descent

  • Day 11: Hanle to Tso Moriri: We drive across the isolated, wind-swept plains of the Changthang. Navigating dirt tracks and nomad trails, we reach the stunning and peaceful high-altitude lake region of Tso Moriri (Korzok).
  • Day 12: Tso Moriri to Jispa: A massive, gruelling day of riding. We leave the lake, connect with the Leh-Manali highway via Tsokar and Pang, cross the towering Tanglang La and Baralacha La, and drop down into Jispa.
  • Day 13: Jispa to Manali: The final riding day. A triumphant return drive back through the Atal Tunnel into the lush green valleys of Manali. We hand over the machines and celebrate the completion of the circuit.
  • Day 14: Manali to Delhi: Drive back to Delhi via Volvo transit. The trip ends, leaving you with the memories of conquering the most extreme Himalayan circuit experience available.
